The goal of the multiple SLE grants and awards is to encourage all faculty to continue to perform, improve, and advance their service learning related activities and practices.

Dr. Kristy L. Daniel Honored with 2025 Service-Learning Teaching Award

Service-Learning Excellence (SLE) at Texas State University is pleased to recognize Dr. Kristy L. Daniel with the 2025 Service-Learning Teaching Award in recognition of her transformative contributions to science education through community engagement. A Service-Learning Fellow since 2011, Dr. Daniel has led hundreds of Texas State University students in impactful SLE projects both locally and abroad. Her innovative courses, including Biology in Ireland and Interpretive Biology Programming and Design, integrate academic content with hands-on service, benefiting organizations such as Seal Rescue Ireland, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and Hays County Master Naturalists.

Her students have developed educational resources, conducted habitat cleanups, and led community outreach events reaching thousands across Central Texas. Dr. Daniel’s work has been featured in international media and supported by 10 grants, with three peer-reviewed publications stemming from her service-learning research. She is a Certified Interpretive Trainer and a Leave No Trace Scientist Team member, further amplifying her influence.

Her dedication to inclusive, experiential learning has earned her numerous accolades, including the TXST Presidential Distinction Award and recognition as an Honorary Professor of International Studies. Dr. Daniel’s commitment to fostering environmental stewardship and scientific literacy exemplifies the highest standards of service-learning excellence.
